Abstract

This study analyzes the importance of the nurse's knowledge in medications used in the ICU. Such an approach is justified, since it improves the agility in the administration of medicines, it allows the reduction in losses and costs, it provides safety in the administration and with that it reduces the mortality and identifies possible adverse reactions. The objective of this study is to identify the importance of the nurse's knowledge in medications used in the ICU, emphasizing important points regarding the lack of specific knowledge in this area. This purpose will be achieved through the bibliographic review, from reading and interpreting articles and books on the topic addressed. The analysis of the study showed that nurses know little about the medicines used in the ICU, often because it is not necessary to know this practice and that it is a medical responsibility. It is extremely important knowledge in the preparation, control and administration of these drugs, to avoid complications resulting from improper administration, and the nurse must always be informed and updated about the effects and drug interactions that may arise, as well as the incompatibility of drug interactions by associations. The nurse has the function of assisting in the diagnosis of drug interactions and trying to minimize the negative impacts they cause in the ICU, besides supervising the team in administering the medications, interpreting the therapeutic plan in the preparation of the patient and observing the results and the possible reactions that the medicines can cause. It is of great importance for nurses to possess specific skills and knowledge in this practice, since in hospital institutions this function is usually delegated to nursing technicians and auxiliaries, in whom they have limited knowledge. In addition, nurses all responsibility for the actions of these professionals, being able to respond ethically and judicially in case of intercurrences.
