Abstract

This research was carried out with the objective of understanding the aspects that empower factions within the Brazilian prison system. The state's absence in the administration of the prison system, low investment in the maintenance and expansion of correctional units, the violence and the severe conditions of the prison are the main reasons that motivated inmates to collate with each other as a way to pressure the public power. Public power was confronted with this power when, in the early 2000s, notably in 2006, the First Command of the Capital, one of the main Brazilian factions, carried out one of the biggest attacks on Brazilian public security forces, when several prisons were attacked. taken by the faction and several attacks against members of public security were carried out. In addition, the associated detainees structure entities in an organizational format, with the purpose of supplying, within the prison, the state absence, promoting the supply of personal products to the detainees, in addition to directly facing the violence and severe conditions installed in the prison. prison and, outside the prison, fight for the power struggle and control of illicit material trafficking, in regions considered strategic to the interests of these factions.
