ANÁLISE DA CAPACIDADE FUNCIONAL E RISCO DE QUEDAS EM IDOSOS INSTITUCIONALIZADOS

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Investigating the risk of falls and functional capacity in institutionalized elderly people is important in order to plan the prevention and rehabilitation of these individuals, minimizing the negative effects of the aging process itself. PURPOSE: to verify the risk of falls and functional capacity in the institutionalized elderly through the application of Timed Up and Go (TUG), Barthel Index (IB) and to perform a correlation between both. RESULTS: The institutionalized elderly analyzed in this study had partial independence and with a low risk of falls according to the TUG and moderate functional disability according to the IB. A significant correlation was found between the variable age and the TUG and length of hospital stay and the variables feeding and IB transfer. CONCLUSION: We suggest more researches around this problem, with a greater number of participants and other variables such as muscular strength, balance and gait as it deals with a current topic of general interest and still little explored.
